Profitable Ways to Use YOUR eBook as part of your Marketing Plan

Even if you hadn't considered information products as part of your business plan, the idea merits some serious reconsideration. Not so much as a potential income stream, but more importantly as a great marketing tool to gain exposure and credibility for your product and business.

Here are some quick examples to consider:

If you sell on eBay...

First, be sure that you have your profile page set-up. Let your visitors know who you are and what you do! If you have a website, this is the perfect place to announce it (as eBay does not let you include blatant promotional links within your actual Auction Listings but a link to your profile page is allowed as part of your listings). If you sell Craft Supplies on eBay, you can easily create an EBook titled "Illustrated Examples and Directions for the Art of Paper Folding" and promote this both on your Profile page, and in your Email Signature when corresponding with Bidders. If you sell Computer Supplies, you could write an EBook on "How to Set Up Your Own Wireless Network" or "Windows XP Tips and Tricks"...and once again, promote this on your Profile page and in your Email Signatures. You can either give these eBooks away as a Bonus to your Winning Bidders (in which case you CAN include it in your Auction Listing), or you can use this as an Upsell or Backend Sale product.

If you sell Products Online – a Cookbook for example…

Create your own unique EBook that contains some helpful cooking tips and hints that set you up as the expert. You can also include a few choice recipes that are easy and bound to be successful – making for a very powerful marketing tool!

If you run a Service Business...

Write a How-to Guide on your topic that answers some of the most pressing questions in your industry or publish a Special Report. For example, a Financial Specialist could write an EBook on “Techniques for Wise Investing” or a report providing information on “Bonds for Beginners”.A Graphic Designer might create a report on how to minimize advertising costs or the basics of commercial printing.

What if you are an Affiliate Marketer...

Write an EBook that compliments the Affiliate Programs that you promote! You can give this away to start a major Viral Marketing campaign, which will gain tons of free exposure to your affiliate links. You can also put together a comprehensive Guide on your topic, and sell it at market value... allowing the affiliate links to serve as Backend Sales to your own product.

Here's Some More Information You Could Use…
What are people willing to pay for eBooks?

Readers will pay your listed price, as long as:
The price is at least reasonable for your readership
They really want or need what you're selling
They trust you will deliver a high-quality product
They trust you will deliver what you've promised and more
They know they will get immediate gratification (immediate delivery)
Ebooks range in price from $8 upwards and can go as high as $80-90 depending on their scope and subject matter.

Non-fiction / how-to books are generally higher-priced since they are more sought after... more in demand by the market they are targeting and they can command the higher price.

What could one charge for an eBook?

Reach a price by considering the following:
1. Is there a pressing need for your book
2. The income-level of your target audience

The first author to publish a book on any topic will be able to charge a higher price.

Also, if your target audience encompasses a high-income group like doctors or lawyers, your pricing can reflect the depth of your readers wallets.

Try to find hot new topics that haven't yet been published and you may find a winner!

Changing the Price is a good trial strategy and you can experiment freely with pricing. For example – try different pricing models for a few months before settling on a final number. You may find that raising the price of your book by even $3-5 may halt your sales completely.

So vary the price periodically over the first few weeks of sales and distribution. It's better to start high and work your way down. Don't do it the other way around. Readers may be understandably annoyed if they wanted to buy the book yesterday, but it costs twice as much today.

All too often, selling any product for a slightly higher price gives the impression of a better-quality product and this is as applicable to books. Readers could assume the material is worth that much more, or that your book is the prime source of information on that particular subject.

Experimentation is a must.

WHY WRITE AN EBOOK?

SO WHY WRITE AN E-BOOK?
From the foregoing chapter in this blog it should be quite obvious – To Promote your Business!

Let's say you already have an Internet business with a quality website and a quality product. An eBook is one of the most powerful ways to promote your business while educating people with the knowledge you already possess as a business owner of a specific product or service.

Our world has changed; Technology has changed; Ideas have changed; and the mindset of the consumer pool has certainly changed. This is the Information Era and content is king!

This is the perfect time to write an eBook. What the publishing industry needs are people who can tap into the world as it is today - innovative thinkers who can make the leap into the new millennium and figure out how to solve old problems in a new way. EBooks are not only a new and powerful tool to disseminate valuable information to millions of people but to use that information to promote your business concepts and values.

Let's say you already have a brilliant product idea, and the expertise to back it up. You still need to get that product out to the waiting world. Not only that, in a world that is so filled with billions of competing ideas, your wonderful concept is bound to get lost in the shuffle. You need to stand out from the common herd – you need to be different – you need to become “The Expert”.

And that process will begin with writing an exceptional eBook – not in the sense of a literary masterpiece, but more in terms of providing valuable information in a concise and easy to understand way.

For example, let's say that you're in the landscaping business. You’ve spent the last fifteen years gardening and caring for shrubs and trees, and have amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience. An eBook would be the perfect way to reach the largest audience of gardening enthusiasts and home owners.

EBooks will not only promote your business - they will help you make a name for yourself and your company, and establish you as an expert in your field. You may even find that you have enough to say to warrant a series of eBooks. Specific businesses are complicated and often require the different aspects to be divided in order for the reader to get the full story.

Perhaps your goals are even more focused and you are looking to building an entire business around writing and publishing - essentially, to start your own e-business. You are thinking of setting up a website to promote and market your eBooks and maybe even producing your own ‘Ezine’.

Do you see an opportunity for success here?

Figure out what your subject matter is – its obviously related to your business and industry and then narrow it down. Your goal is to aim for specificity. Research what's out there already, and try to find a hole that your eBook might fill.

Wedding Planners could write an eBook on the pitfalls of planning a wedding.
Veterinary clinics could write about “House Training your new puppy”.
Antique dealers would be most knowledgeable about “How to spot a Fake!”
Doctors could send out a book on “Lowering your Cholesterol Levels”
And on and on and on…

You don't need a doctorate to write about your subject. All you need is experience and knowledge of your industry. People need advice that is easily understood and easy to read. New parents need advice on infant care. Teenagers would love a treatise on the latest trends and music. Women might appreciate advice on topics as diverse as “How to converse with your Auto Mechanic” or “Fitness”. The possibilities are endless.

After you've written your eBook
Getting your eBook out is going to be your focus once you've finished writing it. Well, the answer is simple: give it away!

You will see profits in the form of promoting your business and getting exposure. You will find affiliates who will ask you to place their links within your eBook, and these affiliates will in turn go out and make your name known.
Make your eBook interactive. Rather than just producing static text, let your readers fill out questionnaires, forms, or even an IQ Quiz. Most importantly though - include a link that will allow them to send your book to their friends and associates. When people interact with books, they become a part of the world of that book. The fact is just as true for books in print as it is for eBooks.

Finally, include an actual order form or a link to your business website, so they can easily buy your product.

And that's why eBooks are so valuable. Not only do they provide a forum for people to get information but they also serve to promote your business at the same time.

YOUR FREE EBOOK IS A POWERFUL MARKETING TOOL

The Internet contains a wealth of information that people use to find out about any subject under the sun. Face it, if you need to get information on any subject, you usually turn to your computer rather then one of the more traditional methods.

Armed with this knowledge, you can now take advantage of it to get your message out there and also help promote your business, your product or your website. So how do you reach your audience and give them the information they seek?

Well, why not write your own eBook?
Now you may be thinking "what is an eBook and what should it be about?". Well, an eBook is just a book – the only difference being, its in digital form. It can be about anything but here’s a tip – you should be writing about some useful information that is related to YOUR product or service or business.

Don’t make it into an ad for your product, rather make sure it provides enough general information on your industry or issues related to it. Write an informative piece that your target audience will find useful and engaging – something that will make them think of your product as the perfect solution to the subject matter of your book.

The great thing about an eBook is that not only will it help increase traffic to your website, but more importantly, it will enhance your reputation as the ‘expert’ on that subject. How would you do this? Simple…

Write your eBook! (which includes research, revisions etc.).

Once this is done, you need to put your website address and your contact details on the last page of the eBook or even just below the title.

Next, offer it free for download on your website (also to other websites which deal with related issues). This can be easily done by doing a search on Google or Yahoo and contacting the webmaster to offer them a reciprocal arrangement. They will be more then happy to put it on their site as it will give them more materials for their members – and of course, its free!

The reason why a well written eBook works so well is that they offer a wealth of information. By reading your eBook your readers will tend to treat you as the ‘expert’ and this would add credibility to your business, your product and/or or website. This is more so if your eBook covers the very subject they need help with. Some folks will feel more comfortable to have an expert such as yourself deal with their situation and would be happy to pay to use your expertise.

And when word spreads (see the chapter on Viral Marketing) others will bookmark and visit your website to see what other information you have to offer on your subject.

Using Free eBooks to promote your business

This is the first in a series of chapters from my FREE eBook on how you too can promote your business or service at almost no cost, by using Free eBooks and Viral Marketing...

Introduction

First off let it be said that this is not a book on how to write and create eBooks (even though it sure seems like it).
This is a book on how to promote and grow your business – whether you are a small, one-person show or a corporate giant,
because both of them have the same issues to face in this expanding market pie where individual market shares keep shrinking and shrinking and shrinking…

There could be a number of reasons for writing a book like this, but there is one very good reason why reading it is an absolute must for anyone trying to grow their business.
Lets look at the facts in an orderly sequence. Just follow my line of thinking for a while here…

Fact: Technology has equipped anyone and everyone to produce the same kinds of sophisticated services, marketing tools and means of distribution – however small the company and however limited their means.

Fact: Again because of the ready availability of technology, little guys can now look like the big boys (you can’t tell them apart unless you visit their office!) and the sham can look like experts.

Fact: The world of business is increasingly competitive, with too many people trying to sell exactly the same things – be they products or services.

Fact: There is a bewildering number of products and services, claiming to produce the same result, flooding the marketplace.

Fact: The marketplace is saturated with an embarrassment of choices – and consumer is king!
Moving on now…

Fact: The winner in this market race is the business which can differentiate itself in a positive light from the rest of the barbarian horde.

Fact: People have become increasingly desensitized to “advertising hype” and have learned to take advertising claims with more than a grain of salt.

Fact: However, people still tend to believe what they read if they perceive it to be coming from an ‘expert’ and if it can present good value.

Fact: Even in this age of information overload, the world still craves ‘good’ and reliable information.

Fact: Most individuals need to supplement their income and even though this seems paradoxical, most businesses need to find new ways to beef up shrinking revenues in an ever expanding market.

Fact: Everyone appreciates a helping hand and tends to look kindly upon anyone who proffers one.

Fact: People LOVE getting free stuff… Businesses like it even MORE!

Fact: People like helping other people – makes them feel good all over.

These are the Facts – question is, what can we do with them?

This is how it works:

To keep things short and sweet, here’s a laundry list of the sequence of events as I see them unfold…

  1. Everyone knows something about something. Everyone has a special interest to which they’ve devoted some part of their life and times. This is especially true if you are in any particular business – after all, you better know ‘something’ valuable about the business you’re in!
  2. Write a book! It doesn’t need to be a 1000 page masterpiece – not even 100 pages. It could be a 30 page book or even a 5 page ‘special report’.
  3. Make sure you put in solid and valuable information – value, value, value! You can source a lot of this information from all over the web, include your own knowledge and insights and put it into your own words)
  4. Create an eBook using any number of inexpensive programs available (or get someone to do it for you), making sure it is attractively presented and easy to read and absorb. Keep it simple for a lay audience or make it complex for a technophile – know what your audience expects and give it to them.
  5. Present information the reader can use to their direct advantage – e.g. If you’re a carpenter, the book could be on plans for a do-it-yourself project with say valuable tips and hints on using a table-saw – but no mention of your skills and exploits. If you’re the managing director of a biotechnology company, the book could be a scientific paper on the results of a recent study on say antibiotic resistance or stem-cell technologies, and sent off to everyone in the health field.
  6. Make sure the content of the book contains NO marketing hype and does NOT talk endlessly about your company, but just presents solid information on your subject
  7. However, equally ensure that the name of your company (or yourself) is visible as the author of this tome and that your contact information is easily accessible at the back. Since this is digital material, it is easy and highly advantageous to include a ‘hot’ hyperlink to your website and your email address.
  8. Now give your book away - For Free!
  9. Reader is intrigued by the attractive eBook (ever notice how you’ve always dumped paper reports into the trash without a second thought to their value?)
  10. Reader reads the book...
  11. Reader loves the fact that they’re getting all this good information (for free too!)
  12. Reader appreciates the noticeable lack of ad hype.
  13. Reader sees you as the go-to guy – the ‘expert’
  14. Reader sees you as the ‘nice guy’ – the one who was thoughtful enough to try and help others.
  15. Reader remembers you when its time to make a buying choice.
  16. Reader becomes customer! Or maybe not(?)
  17. But Reader does pass it on to friends and associates – just to be able to help. After all Reader has nothing to gain by doing so and Associates know that.
  18. Friends pass it onwards and so on and on and on…
  19. Pretty soon just about everyone in the business has one - at least that’s what we hope! But what the hey! It didn’t cost much to begin with anyway!
  20. Now everyone knows about you and what you do and about how wonderful you are –the best kind of promotion that is – Free!

So what do I hope to get out of giving this book away for free? Well, I’m not telling!
Maybe its to show I’m good at what I do – or maybe I’m just a nice guy who likes to help others…

Stay tuned for the next in the series of chapters from my FREE eBook "eBook Marketing for Profit" or link to the website: http://www.ebook-marketing-for-profit.com to download the eBook for free.
